The Japanese words “Kitsune noYomeiri” (狐の嫁入り) also indicate the meaning of“sunshower”.
We don’t know why foxes make weddingfeast after a sunshower.
Since Edo Period,
Hanaoka Fukutoku Inari Jinja Shrine
and Miyamado Shrine
still keep the tradition of playingfox maiden in the ritual,
praying for great harvest andrelationship.
It’s said that the terminology offox maiden derives from ancient China.
A story called “Fox Maiden” is alsodescribed in Strange Stories from aChinese Studio (Liaozhai Zhiyi).
The protagonist Pan Tian Guan rushedin a haunted house
and took away a golden cup from theFoxes’ house.
It’s only several years later thathe knew the cup was from the great Ju’s Family.
He then returned the cup withouthesitation,
but the reason was:
“Foxes can perceive beyond athousand miles. It’s smart to not keep this thing.”
From here, we know how powerful thefoxes are.
Since ancient times, foxes give animpression of mystery and beauty.
