From the Designer’s Desk

Artist Statement
I’m Zhang Sen-jie, Chief Designer at Bard’s Whisper. In the world of craft, creators typically fall into two camps: the academically trained, rich in theoretical knowledge and best suited for conceptual planning; and the hands-on artisans, whose practical experience brings unexpected creative solutions.

Over the past fifteen years, I’ve visited countless workshops across Japan—from glassblowers on Okinawa’s shores to 700-year-old swordsmiths in Kyoto, to Ainu furriers in Hokkaido. These seasoned practitioners possess extraordinary biomimetic skills, often innovating beyond theory.

For “Song of the Flame Hunt,” we collaborated with brass-working maestro seal, who began his journey at age nine in his family’s jewelry workshop and has over thirty years of hands-on experience.

  • Patina-Wash Technique: seal applied a special sedimentation method, allowing pigments to settle within the micro-cast features, naturally accentuating the minute details of the Gorgon’s faces in relief.

  • Five-Layer Metal Lacquer: The central red shield uses advanced automotive-grade lacquer techniques—five or more overcoats—creating a semi-transparent black-speckled crimson finish.

  • Bold Aesthetic: The striking red-and-white palette exudes masculine strength, beautifully contrasted against the stainless-steel case.

We hope the daring design and masterful execution of this watch bring you as much delight as they brought our artisans.
